The annual pilgrimage from
St Martin's in the Fields
Hungry Walkers meet the wonderful women of Chartham
It was good to see familiar faces as well as some new ones amongst the walkers from the Church of St Martin's in the Fields, London, who on Bank Holiday Monday passed through Chartham for "refuelling" at St Mary's Church on their way to their destination, Canterbury Cathedral, where a service was held.
The pilgrimage had to be cancelled in 2020, and this year it had to be postponed from the usual May Bank Holiday to the August Bank Holiday, because of Covid fears.
The pilgrimage normally takes several days, but this year, instead of walking all the way from Trafalgar Square to Canterbury and staying overnight in churches and halls en route, the walk was completed in one day, starting from Charing and passing through Boughton Aluph and Chartham for the final leg to Canterbury.
The day was grey and drizzly, so the 80 or so walkers earned their tea. People from St Mary's had baked a large variety of cakes, which were as usual very well received. And of course, as well as the cake-makers there was a team of tea-pourers, washer-uppers, furniture movers and cleaner-uppers.
All in all, a successful day.
